Valmiki Sundara Kandam

About

Sri Valmiki Ramayana Sundara Kandam is the fifth of the seven kandams or major chapters of the Ramayana written by Maharishi Valmiki. Valmiki emerged from an anthill or "valmikam" in Sanskrit. He became a Maharishi. Later in his life, he wished to write the story of Rama, the then ruling king of Ayodhya. He went to Maharishi Naradha and Naradha told him that he would be able to see all that came before his current time like one would be able to see a gooseberry in their hands.

Valmiki began writing the 24,000 shloka epic now known as Sri Valmiki Ramayana. Sundara Kandam is considered as the most auspicious and most beneficial of all the seven kandams. It is said that reading Sundara Kandam is equivalent to reading the entirety of the Ramayana.
